I just spent my umpteenth hour doing the Yoga Burn workout by Rodney Yee. So I might as well do a little review. I like this dvd because it takes the energy of the power yoga type of workout and slows down the tempo for those of us who are looking for more of a meditative yoga experience. There is still plenty of work involved in this one hour video, however.
In fact, when a yoga movement is slowed down, it takes a lot more muscle effort and strength to go through the movement than a rapid movement that brings you to rest in the next pose. The process of moving from one position to another slowly can bring attention to each muscle involved in the movement and when I am not jerking into the next posture, I feel that I am using the entire length of the muscle.
This type of workout cannot, however, be confused with Yin Yoga, where postures are held for many minutes as one stretches the ligaments along with the muscles. Yoga Burn is purely muscular and provides a great strengthening experience. The workout also gets harder as I get stronger and can slow down even more, or actually hold in the pushup position instead of letting my butt go to the ground.
So get out there and burn!
